What he once loved and lived for, isn’t as fulfilling and he’s on the lookout for something new. Heartstrings is about Las, a famous violinist who seemed to have lost the good feelings when it comes to his music. But as I kept on reading further, the magic seemed to be missing more with each new book. I honestly LOVED the relationships, the music and the beautiful writing. I was a sworn fan of the Conquest series, for the first two books at least, and there wasn’t a soul who didn’t receive that recommendation from me at the time. ![]() It does seem to be my issue first and foremost, but from some authors I do expect more. No other work of fiction so faithfully conveys both the sharp physical realities and the mythic sweep of the transformation of the American frontier-and the transformation of the people who settled it. O Pioneers! was Willa Cather's first great novel, and to many it remains her unchallenged masterpiece. ![]() The first of Cather’s renowned prairie novels, O Pioneers! established a new voice in American literature-turning the stories of ordinary Midwesterners and immigrants into authentic literary characters. ![]() ![]() In this adapt-or-die world, the crucial innovation proved to be jet propulsion. And so began an arms race between the shelled krakens and the bony upstarts: fish evolved teeth to crack the shells of their prey, while those prey thickened their protective shells. Through her words, we learn how evolution of a buoyant shell gave ammonites, nautiluses and their early kin the ability to rise off the sea floor and become fearsome predators, only to find themselves prey to jawed fish. ![]() Staaf compares how both the “terrible lizards” and the “head-footed” cephalopods evolved, diversified and ate their way through their ancestors, then mostly perished in the hostile conditions at the end of the Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago. Anyone beguiled by dinosaurs will probably find Squid Empire irresistible. ![]() ![]() Readers will feel plunged into the book’s intimate-claustrophobic, even-setting and immersed in Evvy’s daily struggles. Hayles’s sympathetic characters and detailed account is complemented by historical documents and photos throughout. Evvy’s strong, emphatic narration gives voice to her resentment, isolation, and determination. Evvy bonds with a new roommate and a warm nurse, but the beginning of war in Europe and the constant deaths in the institution keep the patients under a dark cloud. : Breathing Room (9781250034113) by Hayles, Marsha and a great selection of similar New, Used and Collectible Books available now at great. Nonetheless, the girls find strength in each other and discover creative ways to bring cheer. “Trying to stay alive at Loon Lake felt like it was killing me already,” says Evvy. The cold nurses, strict rules, mind-numbing routines, and endless bed rest are dispiriting for Evvy and her roommates: kind Beverly, glamorous Pearl, and defensive Dena. Those years when the end of life is getting closer but not quite there. If I look at November as being a stage in life, November compares to the time period of older years. ![]() ![]() The outside world seems dreary, brown or grey, and fading. It is before the dormant and cold landscape of winter. Is Frost talking about November or is he comparing November to something else? One of my favorite poems is “My November Guest.” They are deeply personal both to the author and reader. What I mean is the teacher would go on and on about what the material meant. Poetry requires a different sort of “eye” to read and review on what’s read.īack in college when a book or poem was read, the teacher dissected the reading material to the point I’d loose interest. Vincent is slightly insane, bossy, while protective. Our Hero, Vincent, is similar to Nero as he is attempting to become a Made Man with the mafia. Unlike with Nero, re-reads have not diminished my love. I still can’t pinpoint what drew me to this book, as my degree of enjoyment has decreased with every re-read. DUN DUN DUN!
